Bliss Campbell's Innate Sense for Art and Design

Artist Bliss Campbell.
Bliss Campbell is a talented young artist living in New York.  Campbell studied and practiced both art and interior design; we met a few years ago when she was working for legendary design firm, Mark Hampton.  Here are a few of Campbell's most recent works, her ideas integrating art into decorating and more!

MannerOfStyle: When did you know you wanted to become an artist?
Bliss Campbell: Always. Art has been on my mind since I was a baby.

MOS: Did you formally study art?
BC: I was a double major at The University of Virginia in Studio Art and Art History. I have a post graduate degree in American Art from The Sotheby's Institute New York and an Associate Degree from the New York School of Interior Design.

Phoebe.
Pencil, ink, charcoal and gouache on paper.
27-1/2" x 32-1/2" framed.
MOS: Which mediums do most enjoy working with?
BC: I work in a range of mixed media: gouache, oil paint, charcoal, ink, and pencil on board, paper, or canvas.
Hebe.
Pencil, ink, charcoal and gouache on paper.
27-1/2" x 32-1/2" framed.

MOS: Which artists most influence your work?
BC: My influence is the Abstract Expressionists: Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Adolph Gottlieb...to name a few.

Gaia.
Pencil, ink, charcoal and gouache on board.
MOS: Is there a significant work that inspires you?  If so, why?
BC: Willem de Kooning's Woman and Bicycle has always been a favorite. The drama, movement, and passion are primal. Paint is thickly and violently applied in what appears to be a fit of passion. The viewer can not help but feel the energy and chaos. Woman and Bicycle is mesmerizing.
Hestia.
Pencil, ink, charcoal and gouache on paper.
27-1/2" x 32-1/2" framed.
MOS: There is a rumor that Reese Witherspoon owns one of your pieces.  What's the story?
BC: Yes, the rumor is true. Reese Witherspoon owns four of my pieces. She was filming a movie in my hometown and came across my work.
Persephone.
Pencil, ink, charcoal and gouache on paper.
27-1/2" x 32-1/2" framed.
MOS: You worked for several years as a designer at the iconic firm, Mark Hampton.  Do you have any advice on incorporating art into interiors?
BC: When incorporating art into your interior the most important thing is that YOU love it. Price tag, artist's name, or others' opinions do not matter. Art should touch and speak to its owner. It will be with you for the rest of your life so, trust yourself!
