A Chat With Jeremy Corkern

Mid-century renovation by Bates Corkern Studio.  Interior design by Betsy Brown.  It was a treat to tour this amazing project with Jeremy earlier this month!

One of the best parts of working in the design world is meeting the wonderful, creative individuals who influence the industry.  Architect Jeremy Corkern of Bates Corkern Studio in Birmingham, Alabama is one of the first talents I met in the business, and one of the nicest, too.  It had been a few years since I had seen Jeremy (although it is easy to follow Bates Corkern Studio's projects in House Beautiful, Veranda, and many other magazines) so during a recent trip to Birmingham, it was great fun to chat with Jeremy about architecture, his inspirations, his favorite houses, and his recent work.

Bermudian Architecture: Pretty, Practical and Green

Bermudian architecture is not only beautiful, and a unique hallmark of the island, but also practical and green.  At first glance one notices the pristine white roofs and pastel colored exteriors - both full of utility.  The white roofs are pointed and slatted in order to collect rainwater, since rain is the only fresh water supply on the island.  The pastel painted walls are actually stone which is the most practical building material to shield from tropical storms.  Durable Bermudian limestone, used here for the front steps, is another common multi purpose building material.

Houses Of The Hamptons

The towns of the Southeastern shore of Long Island, from Southampton to Montauk, charm and amaze visitors and residents alike. Originally settled in the 1600s, there is ample history in the Gilded Age architecture and estates of the past alongside beautiful and timeless new homes. The Hamptons, with stunning beaches and homes alike, make for a wonderful retreat. Here is a sampling of the scenery that amazed and inspired me.

A lovely example of quintessential Hamptons architecture.

This gorgeous house is one of the first that you see as you enter town on Highway 27.

A beautiful farm on Further Lane.

Every time we drive by, my husband and I admire this charming house which could not be more happily situated.
